Correct. It's important to find a motherboard that supports SLI or Crossfire.

My current Abit IP35 Pro uses the Intel P35 chipset which doesn't support SLI.

I need a new PSU, badly.
I've decided on getting at least an 800 watt, as my current setup needs nearly 700 watts according to the psu calc on newegg.

My head is starting to spin while trying to figure out how many amps and 12v rails I need.

Can someone who knows more about this recommend me a solid, psu in the 800-900 watt range.
gpu is HD 5850.

My advice is to ignore claims of peak wattage. And get the most efficient one you can. Not only do they save you money, they are generally better made.

I like that Intel has finally moved the pins off of the processors.

I hated worrying about bending processor pins, and have had to on occasion, bend them back into place with a tiny screw driver.

1st review I lol'ed

They should ditch the PCI slot. PCI technology is 18 years old, i think it's time to say goodbye.

Because nobody uses sound cards, or wireless cards, or firewire, gigabit adapters (granted that board isn't lacking as far as mobo's go) but i'm sure there is a few users out there that have something plugged into that pci slot

Sorry about that.

Your basically looking for a high enough amperage on each rail to run your stuff.
Say your application requires 24 amps.

36 total amps on 3x rails @ 12 amps each isn't going to cut it
but
36 amps on 1x rail is going to cut it.

tl;dr : rails don't matter unless they subdivide your available power too much
high amperage good, low amperage bad

Hahaha,
the funny part is I hear people every day bitching they have 3 or 4 PCI slots,
but only 1 PCIe slot.
That's usually before they exclaim,
"a graphic card costs $120 dollars?!?!?"
I don't tell them what the high end stuff goes for.

Miserable IT guy has spoken.

Pros: We have these running SLI in 2 HP Z800 WS's
running Parallell's Workstation Extreme. The boxes have 128GB of Memory with the main OS is RHEL 5.3 and the V.OS is Vista 64. What a difference this box makes!!! Running memory intensive apps like GeoFrame 4.5 on RHEL and Petrel 2008 64 on the Vista 64 pose no problems what so ever. What took 2 days to accomplish now takes 4 hrs a savings of 60 hrs a week. The machines and cards will pay for themselves in less than a month.

Our other two WS are running the Quadro 3800 on RHEL 5.3 and they both have 32GB of memory. Memory hogs and crash frequently when put to the test.
Cons: They're expensive cards but worth the money imo.
